To have a five-year technology lead over Intel, TSMC will test the 5nm technology in April 2019.

According to media reports, the 7nm manufacturing process of TSMC has been successfully mass produced on chips such as Huawei's kirin 980, Apple A12 and Qualcomm snapdragon 8150, and the company has ambition of making 5nm. In the original plan, the 5nm technology would not be able to meet customers until 2020, but now TSMC is planning to achieve this a year ahead of schedule, and is expected to start a risk trial production of 5nm EUV in April 2019. Compared with Intel's 10nm manufacturing process, if everything goes well, mass production will be possible to achieve in 2020.

    According to the revealed news, the design of 5nm will cost approximately 1.5 times more than 7nm. Use the more advanced process, and the cost will be higher and higher, which further limits the Moore's law continuation. Though the designing tool of 5nm chip is expected to be completely ready until November, the senior sales director of TSMC infrastructure department said "We haven't testing all possible combinations, but considering the PDK already passed the authenticationwe have enough confidence in the service."


    From the perspective of development, TSMC will be the top semiconductor manufacturer in the world, and there is no problem for it to surpass Intel. AMD is more confident to surpass Intel in the aspect of manufacturing process and reach a higher level. We have reasons to believe that AMD will occupy more shareof the market in the future.
