How small can a 1TB SSD be? A rounded disk-shaped SSD is really portable

With network disk and cloud storage developing rapidly, the focus on mobile physical storage devices is decreasing, which benefit consumers from more affordable price. Although mobile hard disk has been developed for many years, the majority of people having not demand for large storage capacity prefer USB to mobile hard disk due to larger size. But through development of many years, even mobile hard disks have a smaller size at present. In addition, solid-state storage solution with faster read-write speed is more outstanding compared with mechanical storage. HIKVISION portable 1tb SSD with rounded disk-shaped structure is one of the current mainstream mobile SSD products.

Portable and compact design
In most people's impression, the appearance of the mobile hard disk is designed as rectangular shape while the portable HIKVISION SSD chooses a different rounded design with CD disk-shaped structure. It uses silver metal making the product has more mechanical sense. Both sides are polished texture and the metal reflective characteristic increased light-sense aesthetics

In keeping with minimalist design, the portable SSD doesn't have much information on the front and back, except the logo-HIKVISION-is on the front.  The center of the circle is the fingerprint identification area and on the back is the exact SSD model-T100F-and the capacity of the storage space-1024GB SSD.

There are only two side holes, one is the type-C interface for data transmission, and the other is the status indicator light with the size of the pinhole. On the whole, this product is highly integrated. The surface size of the SSD is about the same as the palm size, of which the diameter is less than 7cm. The thickness of it is 8.2mm. This portable SSD is very compact in size.

Encrypting partition management
The accessories of it are also extremely simple. There are only the product manual and two data connection cables, one of which is USB to type-C connection cable and the other is type-C to type-C connection cable.

The fingerprint identification area on the front of the product is one of its highlights. Although the SSD's fingerprint identification encryption management can be used on Windows, Mac and Linux. But the initial setup of fingerprint identification must be completed on Windows system.

The portable HIKVISION SSD is connected to the Windows computer through the data cable, and the "hikfingerprinttool.exe", a special tool for setting fingerprint identification management, can be seen in the simulated "optical drive". As with the fingerprinting settings on smartphones, you first need to add the administrator's numeric or alphabetic password for an alternative that fingerprint identification of SSD is useless.

After the password is set, the administrator's fingerprint information can be input. In the test process, whether it is the administrator's fingerprint input or the subsequent addition of other users' fingerprint, it generally needs to be collected for 3 times to complete the fingerprint input.

After fingerprint entry is complete, partition settings can be made in the software, including public areas that can be used by any user and private areas that can be invoked by fingerprinting.

The number of private zones can be divided into up to five, but only one private zone can be used per user.

In "fingerprint management" of the software, we can add new users and assign private partition permissions that they can access to.

After the partition setup is complete, only the public domain is displayed by default when we connect the portable SSD to the computer. If users want to call the private area with permissions, the private area will be displayed when corresponding fingers are placed in the fingerprint identification area.

Read and write speed Test
Although the fingerprint encryption applied to this portable SSD looks very cool, but the primary role of the hard disk is naturally storage data and what matters is read and write speed in user experience. Through HDDScan test, the read and write speed of HIKVISION T100F mobile SSD can be maintained at an average of 250MB/s, which can be seen from the testing graph.

Through the actual file transfer, it can be found that the transfer rate from "Computer-side SSD to Mobile SSDs" (write) is 60.7MB /s, while the transfer rate from " Mobile SSDs to Computer-side SSD " (read) is 383.2MB /s, which has obvious advantages over the mechanical disk.

With the Type-C to Type-C data cable, we can connect this mobile SSD to a smartphone connection, but on condition that the phone needs to support OTG and enable this feature. After connecting the mobile SSD, we can see the increase in available space in File Management, along with "OTG".

It takes about 4 minutes and 47 seconds to transmit 1GB files from the portable SSD to the mobile phone, while it takes about 2 minutes and 33 seconds to transfer 1GB files from the mobile phone to the portable SSD.

Testing Summary
HIKVISION has developed for many years in the storage device industry, and the quality of its products is basically beyond doubt. In terms of read and write speed, this mobile 1TB SSD is at the normal level of SSD. Official data show that it can reach a maximum reading speed of 510MB/s and write speed was 490MB/s. The reason why it did not achieve such speed in our test mainly is the computer data interface we used is USB 3.0. The T100F mobile solid-state drive can also support USB 3.1, which have higher efficiency in transmitting data.

Although USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 have only a 0.1 version gap in numbers, the transmission efficiency of the two USB specifications is very different. The transmission rate of USB 3.0 can reach a theoretical peak of 5GB/s, while the that of USB 3.1 theoretical peak to 10GB/s. The bandwidth of the two transmissions is also quite different. So, if the computer transmitting the data is equipped with a USB 3.1 interface, the read and write speed of the T100F SSD will be increased.
